Project Portugal-

Casa nas Serras which started out as 'Project Portugal' is a charming Bed and Breakfast located in Vila Nova de Poiares, Central Portugal. In between Porto in the north and Lisbon in the south we are situated 30 minutes east of Coimbra on the foothills of the Serra da Estrela.

After the renovations, this authentic country house has been turned into a small paradise in the Portuguese countryside.

Our blog below shows every step of the way, from tearing down parts of the house, to the reconstruction, the works on the swimming pool, interior designing, gardening and much more.

Please feel free to take a look around on this blog or on our website http://www.casanasserras.com

Questions, comments and requests for availability can be sent to info@casanasserras.com and we´ll get back to you as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you here in Portugal!

Vegetables from the garden

Yesterday´s harvest; tomatos, cherry tomatos, eggplant, melon, water melon, and bell peppers!

After a couple of weeks of slight neglect to the vegetable garden, it is now back in perfect shape. An afternoon of weeding and a couple of nights of drizzling rain followed by sunny days, perfect for late harvest of summer vegetables!

Now we need to get back into action to prepare for a winter of cabbages; red cabbages planted today and 2 more kinds ready to plant later this week!

Working in the garden

After more than a month of constant visitors, we have our first day off tomorrow. Weather forecasts show a cloudy morning followed by a sunny afternoon and rest of the week. Perfect for a morning of gardening, weeding, mowing grass and taking care of the flowers that we have planted. Also a great morning to take advantage of the extra time we have to give the plants and grass some extra water which it can definetely use in such a long, sunny, hot and dry summer.

Here a picture of some flowers that were given to us by some of our first visitors! We´ve kept them in pots on the terrace for the summer and hope to plant them in the garden later this year.

With a little help from our friends...

Take a look at the collection of flowers that we have been able to put together with a little help from our friends and family. Now all we ask for is that nature helps us keep them well throughout the summer so that we can plant them in the garden in the autumn.

Swimming Pool

Hey everyone!

Sorry we haven´t been around much lately, but we´ve been busy busy busy trying cross off as much off of our to-do list as possible.

One of those major things is/was landscaping around the swimming pool, and after weeks of hard work we are finallly geting there. The green grass and light blue color of the swimming pool have tempted us more than once to just drop our work and dive in for a swim, but we´ve been able to hang in there and keep the work going and hopefully soon we´ll be able to say we´re all done with it.

Here are some pictures to tempt you to come out here and take a look!

Don´t forget, bookings can now be made by emailing us at info@casanasserras.com and prices can be found on our website http://www.casanasserras.com.

Kiwi

In order to create some shade around the water well and to make it a cozy area in the garden, we planted kiwi plants around it. Kiwi plants are known to be fast growing and perfect to create shade; similar to grape vines.

We planted 2 female plants (left and right) and 1 male plant. Now just waiting them to grow.

Green green grass...

After a long weeks work we have our path and grass areas mapped out. We sowed the grass and, lined off the paths with rocks and brought in gravel. With the help of the sun and water we hope to have more grass soon, but as you can see we´re off to a good start!

Our guestrooms are also as good as done, waiting on a couple last pieces of furniture to take final pictures for the website, but here is a little preview.

The wall...

Last week we were busy building a wall between our swimming pool and the house.

The wall will support the land in front of the house and it also creates a nice place to sit next to the pool.

The stairs will provide easy access to the pool from the guest rooms.

Chopin watching the sunrise

Chopin loves sitting on the balcony overlooking the garden and swimming pool.

Garden and parking area

This week we asked one of the builders if he would help us with cleaning up the parking area with the digger.
Levelling out the soil where parking will be.
Now we´ll order the material to harden the soil.
This weekend we will do some more cleaning up around the fruit trees we planted last week.
Sowing grass, planting more trees and flowers and this piece of the garden is almost finished.

Update on the swimming pool

Border stone around the swimming pool has been placed. One of the next steps is filling up the empty  space around the pool and landscape it into the garden, and early next week the liner will be placed! Can´t wait till it´s time to fill it up with water!!

Spring Blossom

Spring is here and it can be seen all around us. The trees are blossoming, flowers blooming and the birds are singing. With the sun up earlier and earlier it´s a pleasure to get up and start the day early.

Last week was filled with painting doors, painting bathroom ceilings, painting the walls in guestroom 3 and of course work in the garden; putting up the last of the fencing, planting lemon and orange trees, planting our palm tree and sowing our seeds for the vegetable garden.

With all that done and much more, we took the afternoon off yesterday and spent it at the beach in Figuera da Foz. With an amazing seafood lunch and some time in the sun, we came back refreshed and ready for a new week.

This week on the list of things to do:
- Hang lighting in all rooms and bathrooms
- Paint the last guestroom
- Continue garden works
- Go in search of garden furniture
- Write the text for the website
- and the list goes on....

So it´s off to work for me!

Wishing everyone a great start to a new week!
